MY FIRST FARM
Welcome!
Hello there! you know how you plan everything and it goes well in your mind and then you start but things just take a different route than you expect."The story of my first farm". Well I am a young lady living in the northern part of Nigeria of West Africa. With a good amount of rain and arable land, I went on with my initial plan of a half hectare maize farm which started with employing labor because I was going manual on this one and of course I could not do such labor alone.
So I went in search of help, then I got my first workers (two young men), we had a sit down to agree on prices and work days but since they had experience than me in farming and I wanted to win them over, flexed my unused management skill but then while I kept to my word of payment and I tried to reach out to create a work relationship, they preyed on my niceness, never kept to agreed date or time, made me pass my budget and didn't finish planting as agreed. I know my faults, one of the greatest was not having a plan b for workers. No excuses though! but since they were young and hardworking I thought they would understand the struggle a young lady trying to kick off something or was it because am a woman?. But then people will always be who they want. But I got through the first stage Which was to till the land and get my seeds in the ground.
Then I had to find new workers because that was only the beginning, I still had first manure application, weeds clearing, pesticide application, more manure application up until harvest. I told my self i was dealing with the same set of workers after each, which was a good but moderately expensive choice, but a girl gotta do what she needs to do. But another thing I had and still have issues with was I found only one person who was similar, young entrepreneur in agribusiness Zuriel farm. All my research was done with people who did not see agriculture as business, middle age to old people, who didn't understand why after going to university then I decided to come home and farm....
